The Wholesome Table : Fresh and Healthy

by 2:07:00 AM
Last January, Zomato Philippines invited Travel Eat Pinas to dine at The Wholesome Table located at Estancia Mall, Capitol Commons, Pasig City.

The Wholesome Table is the reflection of its founder Bianca Araneta- Elizalde. Every detail of the restaurant, including the menu, is her idea. Bianca together with her husband Juan Elizalde founded the restaurant to let Filipinos savor pizza, pasta, rice meal and snacks without having a guilt. Each dishes serve in The Wholesome Table are made from fresh and healthy ingredients.

The Wholesome Table has a comfortable and earthy ambiance. The wooden chairs and tables complement with the plants and other ornaments that are strategically placed in the restaurant.

We started our banquet with a salad that is close to our heart, the Cordillera Salad.

Cordillera Salad, SOLO PHP 190 or USD 3.79 and  REGULAR PHP 350 or USD 6.98

80% of the ingredients in the salad came from Cordillera. It has one of a kind candied chayote that tastes like apples, fresh Sagada oranges,  crunchy Benguet poll beans, carrots, lettuce, onion, feta, boiled duck egg and peanut brittle. The salad is drizzled with a citrus vinaigrette that compliments well with the other ingredients.

After the Cordillera Salad, we tried The Wholesome Table's Avocado Toast.

Avocado Toast, PHP 260 or USD  4.99

The Avocado Toast is composed of toasted sourdough topped with avocado, dijon mustard, free-range egg and dukkah spice. Surprisingly, the avocado and egg compliment each other perfectly. Avocado Toast is perfect for breakfast.

After the Avocado Toast, we tried the nutritious meal in a bowl called Power Bowls.

We tried the Poke Bowl first. Instead of using tuna as an ingredient, The Wholesome Table uses salmon to avoid the high mercury content of tuna.  The poke bowl is composed of brown rice topped with fresh salmon and juicy salmon, sea vegetables called wakame, onion leeks, crunchy romaine lettuce, ebiko, furikake, togarashi spice, pickled ginger and drizzled with Japanese Mayonaise.

Poke Bowl, PHP 350 or USD 6.98

Aside from the Poke Bowl, we also savor the Macro Bowl. The Macro Bowl has complete meal composed of carbohydrate, protein, and fats. The Bowl is composed of quinoa, wakame, white beans, sweet potato, kale, spinach, teriyaki almonds and garlic yogurt dressing.

Macro Bowl, PHP 450 or USD  8.98

A trip at The Wholesome Table is not complete without tasting their Mushroom Paella. The paella has a distinct taste coming from saffron caulirice, button mushrooms, asparagus, artichoke, red onion, garlic, roasted pepper and chorizo made of walnut.

Mushroom Paella, SOLO PHP 620 or USD 12. 37  and SHARE PHP 1480 or USD 29.53

A meal at The Wholesome Table is not complete without tasting their healthy Mango Cheesecake.

Mango Cheesecake, SLICE PHP 170 or USD 3.39, WHOLE PHP 1530 or USD 30.53

As a cheesecake lover, we enjoyed every single bite of the Mango Cheesecake. The cheesecake has gluten-free graham, sweet mangoes, honey, vanilla, cream cheese, and butter.

The Wholesome Table did give us a healthy treat with their delectable dishes during our visit. The dishes have generous servings but a bit pricey because of the healthy and fresh ingredients incorporated in it. The restaurant has an earthy and refreshing vibe that is perfect if you want to dine, relax or have some intimate moment with your loved one.

GRUB CENTRAL : YOUR SOUL FOOD IN THE PHILIPPINES

by 1:41:00 AM

Before January ended we went to a new Food Park in Malingap Street, Diliman, Quezon City called, Sagul. Sagul Food Park aims to provide food enthusiasts a comfortable and relaxing venue where they can have a bottle of beer while enjoying delectable dishes and shows that exhibit different types of art.

The Sagul Food Park has two levels. Food stalls line up on the side of the first level while the dining area where wooden tables and chairs were placed in the middle of it. Mats and bean bags were placed on the second level for those who want to relax and unwind. The area is well ventilated and not crowded but the most important feature that this park has, for us, is the parking area, not all food park has one.

Among all the food stalls at the park, Grub Central caught our attention because of the food that they serve- "soul food". This is the first time that we heard about the latter in the Philippines and we got curious about it. Luckily, one of the owners of Grub Central was there to give us an idea about "soul food"

SOUL FOOD

Soul Food was a term that got popular during the 1960s. It is the term use for a variety of traditional African cuisine in the Southern United States. Soul food also became a tool that reminds people who participated in the Great Migration of home and family. That is why for Grub Central, " Soul Food Is Made From The Heart."

GRUB CENTRAL

According to Mr. Anjo Querol, one of the owners of Grub Central, the name of their food stall was derived from Grub which means food in Southern language and Central or center.

Grub Central strictly serve soul food with generous servings at an affordable price. The owners of Grub Central want each customer to feel that the dishes are worth every single peso that they paid for it. Value for money and taste of food matters to Grub Central.

MUST-TRY DISHES

SPICED CHICKEN SKIN
PHP 90 or USD  1.80

To start our soul food banquet we tried Grub Central's Spiced Chicken Skin.  The chicken skin is crunchy and oozing with juice on every bite.

At first, we thought that Grub Central's chicken skin tastes like the ordinary ones but as we bite the latter it releases a  smoky and salty flavor.  The dip compliments the chicken skin and Filipinos craving for a sour dressing.

GRUB CENTRAL COUNTRY FRIED CHICKEN
PHP 165 or USD 3.29

Our first reaction when we saw Grub Central's Country Fried Chicken was "WOW". Their fried chicken is the biggest chicken serving that we saw in Manila.

Unlike the usual fried chicken serve in restaurants, Country Fried Chicken have a hint of smoky taste coming from different spices. The chicken skin is crispy even if you leave it for a couple of minutes or so. The meat is cooked well, tender, oozing with juice and is seasoned perfectly.

ALABAMA COUNTRY FRIED STEAK
PHP 189 or USD 3.79

Instead of the usual grilled, broiled and pan-seared steak, Grub Central breaded their steak with different spices, fry, drizzle with creamy and smoky gravy and top it with butter.

Like the Country Fried Chicken, the Alabama Country Fried Steak has a generous serving. The steak breading is crunchy while the meat is chewy. The steak is perfectly seasoned, flavorful and with a hint of smoky taste because of the spices incorporated in the latter.

SIDE DISH

To spice up our banquet we also tried Grub Central's side dishes- Mac &  Cheese and Creamed Corn.

MAC & CHEESE
PHP 45 or USD .90

Grub Central's Mac & Cheese has al dente pasta mixed evenly to a sauce made from cheese and other spices. For us, the overall taste of Grub Central's mac & cheese is cheesy barbecue.

CREAMED CORN
PHP 45 or USD .90

Grub Central's Creamed Corn is composed of al dente corn with creamy and sweet sauce. Unlike other creamed corn, the special sauce of Grub Central binds evenly to the corn mixed with it.

Grub Central gave us a whole new gastronomical experience with the food that they passionately created. Each soul food that they serve is oozing with flavors. The serving is generous and affordable. Truly, Grub Cental give food enthusiasts value for every money that they spend and rich flavor on every dishes that they serve.

To try Grub Central's Soul Food you  may visit them at,

SAGUL FOOD PARK
43 Malingap Street, Teacher's Village, Quezon City

WOK2GO : HEALTHY FAST FOOD RESTAURANT IN MANILA

by 10:11:00 PM

Restaurateur Kim Garcia, Marc Soong, and Angie Mead King started the Chinese New Year by opening their brainchild, WOK 2 GO, a restaurant with a rice in a box concept, in Venice Grand Canal Mall at McKinley Hill, Taguig City.

Eat fresh and fast and have a great vibe with WOK 2 GO.

For two years, Garcia, Soong, and King meticulously conceptualize and plan their brainchild, WOK 2 GO, so that they can provide Filipinos healthy on the go dishes. They make sure that each cuisine that they serve contains all the vitamin, mineral and nutrients that Filipinos need in order to stay active, healthy and mentally sharp. Aside from that, they also make it to a point that even if the dishes are easily prepared, the dishes will still incorporate their authentic flavors.

Restaurateur Kim Garcia, Marc Soong, and Angie Mead King.

As a car enthusiast Garcia, Soong, and King designed WOK 2 GO as a food truck situated in Rizal Park. A countertop placed at the side of the truck serves as a table with stools where their visitors can sit, dine or wait for their food.  Food enthusiasts, on the other hand, can see the Chefs in action on the window of the food truck.  The ambiance of  WOK 2 GO is simple, cozy and refreshing. The green and the yellow colors and graffiti on the truck showers a refreshing vibe in the restaurant.

Food Truck inspired design of WOK 2 GO.

Fun and creative food truck inspired design of  WOK 2 GO.

"Eat on a food truck in Rizal Park" theme of WOK 2 GO.

WOK 2 GO provides their visitor the liberty to choose their preferred dishes by following three easy steps.

STEP 2: CHOOSE YOUR FIBER

Rice and noodles are mixed with fresh vegetables such as bean sprout, carrots, onion, cabbage, and snow cabbage while the mixed vegetables are composed of broccoli, cauliflower, mushroom, bell pepper, bean sprout, carrot, onion, cabbage, and snow cabbage.

STEP 3: CHOOSE YOUR MEAT

Choose, add and even mix and match  WOK 2 GO's  beef, pork, chicken, shrimp, and squid.

ADD ONS:

To add flavor to your meal you can add fried tofu, broccoli, cauliflower, mushroom, bell pepper, fried shallots and garlic, crushed peanut, sesame seeds, chopped chili, and egg.

We at Travel Eat Pinas didn't miss the chance to mix, match and made our WOK 2 GO dish during their opening and here's our two favorite.

HONG KONG PEPPER SAUCE+ WHITE RICE+ BEEF+ EXTRA BEEF+ MUSHROOM+ BELL PEPPER

The sauce is sweet  and a bit spicy. The beef is tender and seasoned well while the bell pepper  and other vegetables are crunchy. The sauce, beef and vegetable are perfectly mixed up to the bottom of the container.  The dish tastes meaty with a tinge of spice.

Pepper Sauce + White Rice + Beef + Extra Beef+  Mushroom + Bell Pepper and  Soda costs PHP 290 or USD 5.84

JAPANESE TERIYAKI + WHITE RICE + CHICKEN + EXTRA CHICKEN + SESAME SEEDS

The sauce is sweet and savory. The vegetables mixed with the rice are al dente while the chicken is tender and juicy. The sauce, chicken and vegetables are mixed thoroughly that you can savor everything up to your last spoonful.
